The Housing Crisis in Africa

Africa faces a severe housing deficit, with millions living in informal settlements plagued by overcrowding, poor sanitation, and insecurity. Countries like *Kenya, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Zambia* experience acute shortages due to:

Rapid urbanization– Over 60% of urban populations live in slums (UN-Habitat).

Affordability challenges – Many households spend *over 20% of their income on rent*, leaving little for other essentials.

Growing demand – Kenya alone has a shortage of 2 million affordable homes, increasing by **10% annually.

Disproportionate impact – The most vulnerable—low-income families, women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities—bear the brunt of this crisis.

Without intervention, homelessness and substandard living conditions will continue to perpetuate cycles of poverty and inequality.

Our Approach

SNI takes a multi-faceted, community-driven approach to tackle Africa’s housing crisis:

1. Affordable & Sustainable Housing Solutions

- We provide *low-cost, durable homes* designed for gradual expansion as families’ financial situations improve.

- Our community-led construction projects ensure culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable designs.

2. Advocacy & Policy Reform

- We work with *governments, NGOs, and stakeholders* to remove systemic barriers to affordable housing.

- Our advocacy focuses on *land rights, financing access, and tenant protections* for marginalized groups.

3. Disaster Response & Recovery

- When crises strike, we provide *emergency shelter, rebuilding support, and long-term recovery programs* for displaced families.

4. Community Empowerment

- We offer *skills training, financial literacy programs, and microfinancing* to help families achieve self-sufficiency.

- By fostering *social cohesion*, we ensure that housing solutions strengthen—not isolate—communities.

Our Impact

- *Families gaining stability* through secure, upgraded homes.

- *Communities revitalized* by improved infrastructure and economic opportunities.

- *Disaster-affected populations* supported with emergency and transitional housing.

- *Policy changes* that expand access to affordable housing across Africa.
